Marie Anna McCant, the last matriarch of the McCant family departed this life on Sunday August 6, 2023, at 7:10p.m. after a brief stay in Jefferson Hospital. She was born on March 8,1933, Glassboro, NJ, from the marriage of Levy McCant and Annie Johnson, who instituted a family of Christian values.
At an early age, Marie attended church, accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior, and joined St Marks Episcopal Church where her mother Evangelist Annie McCant served. As a young Christian, Marie sang on the church choir and group called the Gospel Wonders. They traveled through the New Jersey and Pennsylvania area lifting songs of praise. She loved to sing and later in life joined. St. Matthews Church, Williamstown, NJ under Reverend Raymond Gordon and sang with the church choir as well. It was a joy she treasured much.
Marie received her formal education in the public school system in Glassboro, NJ. She was an excellent seamstress in her personal life and several places where she showed her talents. One particular employer was Modern Garments in Glassboro, NJ where she helped sew uniforms for the United States military. Her final employment she was a supervisor at SONY records in Pitman, NJ where she retired in 1993, with over 30 years of service.
Some of Marie’s favorite pastimes hobbies were sewing, cooking and she was very handy at repairing things…taught by her Father Levy McCant, who built the family’s home with only a two-year education. Marie learned how to make do with what you had to make it through. As the youngest of the family, she helped all her 8 siblings.
Her twin sons Kent Roy McCant and Kim Roger McCant and her granddaughter Shakyra Marie McCant, were ever present in her life and primary care givers during her health struggles. Also, Shirley Woodruff, of Tennessee, aided with care giving as she did for Marie’s sister Gladys
Robinson in her time of need. Definitely a member of the family for years. A host of nieces, nephews extended family, and her St. Matthews Church Family.
Marie was preceded in her death by her parents, Levy and Annie McCant and all eight siblings Mildred Russell, Verna Bailey, Glassboro, NJ,
Omega McCant, Newark NJ, James McCant, Arizona, Gladys Robinson, Washington, DC, Dorothy Hailey of Irving, NJ: Bro. Lt. Leroy McCant of Glassboro, NJ. Oh, what a time it will be when they meet and welcome
